Dealing with the emotional fallout

Book: Last Destination by Cora Flynn

I enjoyed the switch from book one where this found family now had to step up for Marley who took the lead in book one. Marley is still capable but with her usual support system and medication no longer an option, it's the survivors turn to help her make it to the end. Marley really goes through it and her heartbreaking past is revealed; I had guessed some of the broader strokes but it was a lot bleaker than I imagined!
Although they are still stranded, the stakes didn't feel quite as high this time, but I liked how it left room to focus on the emotional trauma as well as how it forced some secrets into the spotlight. The book doesn't just stick a bow on an HEA ending when they exit the jungle and I enjoyed how each of the characters have fallout from their experience to deal with on page; Ambrose finds his priorities have completely changed, Nikki has to deal with his alcohol dependency and Marley's grief journey begins after years of guilt. Maddox is in a different spot though as he is now thrust into the world after only knowing a cell for years; Maddox was probably my stand out as he adopted these people as his family from day one and I loved how he supported Nikki later in the book, this man doesn't do things by halves!
My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it overall; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read
