I got this book as part of my Fairyloot Subscription box. I admit I devoured the story in a day; I couldn’t put the book down.
The story was advertised to be very Hunger Games-like and 2010 dystopian. Let me stop you; it’s not that. Yes, the world is a dystopian one set 500 years into the future and, as usual, humanity has eradicated itself. I agree that while there are trials, it’s not Hunger Games at all.
It’s more a school where rich kids and those from influential families go; it’s political choices. Some are made with the excuse of the “greater good”, when it’s nothing but a political agenda.
There is a lot of bullying, normalised, as well as not-so-subtle hints of the abuse inflicted by the Poet’s father on both herself and her mother.
Yet even with all of that, I was taken by the story, by Poet’s struggle to want to make her own choice, not to be forced to marry a man she is disgusted by. Those choices came with a heavy price, such as her family and those she called her friends.
We all know that it’s during tough times that you see who your real friends are. This statement is paramount in this book. Now I need to get book two!
