I have read so many amazing books in the last few months, and this is now one of them.
My heart is grieving for our FMC and our MMC. Probably more for the MMC because he has to live forever with the knowledge of what he lost. Our FMC will live blissfully unaware, except for that faint feeling of missing someone without knowing why. Which, in my opinion, is almost as heartbreaking as knowing what they're missing from the readers standpoint.
I am absolutely terrified of this exact thing (minus the gods, of course) happening in the future if the earth ever boycotts humans. The detail that was used to describe every fungusy part made each scene that much more realistic (and for me utterly terrifying).
I wish our couple could've had more time together knowing the mutual feelings before the end. However, I do think that the way this played out was much better for the story. It would've felt too HEA and repetitive if not, I think.
