Thank you to the author, Eve Riche, for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own and freely given.
Full disclosure, when I started this book I had to put it down. At the time the news was covered in the case I’m sure you’ve all heard of by now. And while this entire series focuses on the retribution given when the legal system fails, it was too close to current events to be in the right headspace to read it.
I needed time to divorce the two, because while this series is built, nay filthy with consent, there are still pieces of it that depict brutal violence against vulnerable people. But that’s not what I want to talk about in this review.
What I want to talk about is Milo. He’s always been the funny one. The odd one, the comic relief. Until he wasn’t. Until he broke. Milo’s use of humor has always been front and center. He singlehandedly redefined the cookie monster in the last book. As he says it, the jokes aren’t a mask, they’re the lid.
This is why of all of Fury’s men, it was Milo I was drawn to the most. Because when he’s quiet, he’s different. He covers his hurt and pain with jokes, quips, and one-liners. But it’s the funny ones that are breaking inside. (Check on your funny friends, folks.)
Milo needed to know it was okay to be quiet. That people had him, were there for him, and not just as jokester or something to fix. This was one of the most beautiful parts of this finale to the Hanged Men trilogy. Letting Milo be Milo.
Also.. KNOX CRACKS A JOKE. A whole joke! Out loud! And it’s funny!
The final book in the series is a wild ride with so many jaw dropping moments. None of which I will spoil here. I will say this, the end did bring up a few tears. That’s it. That’s all you get. (Who’s literary-ily edging now Eve Riche, HUH?)
Five very cute (and probably very deadly) kittens for this one.
P.S. Can we get a book about Gloria now? Because I NEED to know more about that whole situation. And the collars. Mainly the collars.
