This book is filled almost cover to cover (why almost? I'll get to that), with aching, romantic tension between the FMC Mira and Aidric, the MMC.
In the aftermath of the war, Mira Winters has vowed she will not use her magic again.
Aidric Dawson, who is a member of the aristocracy and the son for a disgraced high-ranking official, and himself a rumoured death wielder.
They are both students of Ivercrest University and despite being from very different societal circles, are thrown together when they are assigned to investigate a murder with far-reaching consequences.
This book is absolutely overflowing with tension, banter, twists, turns and discoveries. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about it, right up to around the last 10-15%. In all honesty, that final few chapters felt as though they had been written in response to editorial feedback. It read like a checklist of each element, no matter how briefly it was mentioned, and bringing a resolution to them. It felt unnecessary.
If it hadn't been for that one criticism, this would have been a five-star read.
The writing is crisp, detailed, fun, emotive and very easy to consume. For the most part, Our Dark Incantations was a very, very fun read. The magic, the characters, dialogue, and mystery clearly had a great deal of focus and though during the writing stage.
You will enjoy this book if you are a fan of books such as Harry Potter, but wants it to be grown up and darker.
