I wanted to like this, but this was a DNF at 25% unfortunately. The book was just ok at best for me, and I could not see anything that I thought might redeem if I were to keep going.

The first 10% of the book is taking us through the initial setup including the competition (very small part of the book). I had some frustrations and annoyances with this part of the book, mainly due to what felt like very convenient plot devices.

The writing style for this is ok, neither loving nor hating it. One of my issues with this is that it feels less like they're true enemies and more like he considers her beneath him, which is not nearly as satisfying or enjoyable.

Ultimately I decided to DNF when we got to the reveal of the big bad evil and it was just....meh. If I really loved Renaissance Italy, that might have been enough to keep me engaged with the book and the story, but the plot and the characters were not enough to do it for me.

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book!
