This was such an absorbing read. It’s starts right up with the sinking of the Titanic, as we follow Bea and Marguerite’s perilous journeys and eventual rescue, and how they happen to become co-caretakers of fellow survivor, infant Remy.
From there, we see them return to their lives, now forever changed by their experience.
We see Bea trying to figure out how she is going to make it in this new country, without her cousin’s support, which was always the plan.
We see as Marguerite deals with the pressure from her parents to marry her fiancé (whom she has no feelings for) in order to secure their place in society.
I really loved how these women had such different challenges before them, and how neither could really comprehend the others’ (like Bea just not understanding why Marguerite needed to marry this man; her family’s rich! 😂)
The search for Remy’s family lead to some really emotional moments, especially as Bea became so attached to him. And I also really loved Marguerite’s little romance side plot!
Overall, I really enjoyed my time with this one, and highly recommend it to anyone interested in this time period; I find it a really interesting time because society was really undergoing some major changes, and I really enjoyed getting this little (fictional) snapshot of the time with these two women.
Audiobook notes: Saskia Maarleveld and Gail Shalan were amazing! With all the accents and so many emotional moments (Saskia really had me going with everything surrounding Remy at the end 😭). They both had me completely immersed throughout. Just an overall fabulous audio production!
