Nick St. George is a cocky, himbo- type hockey player. Poppy Wylder is the good girl best friend of his twin sister. The tension between them builds from the first page. It is very satisfying seeing Nick and Poppy both discover in real time that just because he was a player before, once he decides to play the doting boyfriend as a favor to Poppy, he excels at putting her first. There is definitely some pining on both sides, which adds to their chemistry. I loved how there is no drama with the twin sister as well. It emphasizes how well Poppy fits into the St. George family, which she so desperately needs. I also liked the way both characters struggle with what their lives will look like after graduation, which is such a prevalent concern during that part of life for most people.
I think if there was such a thing as a cozy new adult hockey rom com, this would be a perfect example. I wouldn't describe it as low-stakes, but it is not too suspenseful, no 3rd act breakup, and the happy ending is very happy.
