I was immediately hooked by the opening of The Reader. The concept of the hidden twin was a fantastic hook, and the magic system felt genuinely fresh and interesting. I enjoyed the lore surrounding the Seid and the potential for a unique world.
Unfortunately, the execution felt underdeveloped. The writing leaned toward the immature side, and the world-building lacked the vivid detail needed to feel immersive. My biggest hurdle was the protagonist, Runa. She felt very passive and lacked a backbone, constantly needing to be rescued by those around her. It also felt inconsistent that she was so sought after as “The Reader” when most of the Seid possessed similar abilities.
The romantic subplots also struggled to find their footing. The connection between Runa and Leif felt forced and lacked the organic chemistry needed to make me root for them. I actually found Otho to be a more interesting prospect, but even that dynamic felt underwhelming and thin. Without a strong emotional core, the stakes just didn't feel high enough.
The book ends on a well-crafted cliffhanger that honestly would have hit so much harder if I had felt any connection to the characters. While the concept is strong, the character arcs and romantic development needed more depth to truly deliver on the story's promise.
