The Blood That Burns is the first book in the Witches of the Triquetra Legacy series, and follows Eliza Swan, who has done something that hasn't happened in centuries — awakened the Coven.
Unfortunately, that awakening hasn't gone unnoticed.
It has caught the attention of the very people who would quite happily see witches, their magic and their craft wiped from existence permanently. Now Eliza finds herself faced with leading the fight to protect the Coven and ensure that doesn't happen.
I absolutely love Becca's writing. It's beautifully descriptive, richly atmospheric and absolutely brimming with passion.
One of my favourite things about her storytelling is the way she weaves elements of factual history into fast-paced fantasy. It gives the story a richness and depth without ever weighing it down, and I found myself flying through the pages. In fact, I devoured the entire book in a single sitting and was more than a little put out that I couldn't immediately dive into book two!
My only niggle was that I found myself wishing I'd read Becca's Triquetra series beforehand. Particularly at the beginning, I occasionally felt as though I'd walked into a conversation that had already started. There were moments where I suspected previous knowledge would have given certain characters, relationships and events a little more context.
So, naturally, there's only one sensible solution: read the Triquetra series and then come back and reread this one. You know… for research purposes. Obviously. 👀
Overall, The Blood That Burns was a thoroughly addictive read filled with witches, danger, history, magic and passion, and it's a very strong 4⭐ read for me.
Although, once I've done my Triquetra homework and returned for round two, that rating may very well change… (for the better, of course)
