This was a wonderful urban fantasy! I liked that the world wasn't so enmeshed in magic that technology was irrelevant. It very much felt like these events could happen in our own world.
Sunnvia has been hiding in plain sight. In a world where some people wield elemental powers, she is passing as non-magical. Her friends are children of those on the ruling council, people with magic whose job is to protect society from the "evil" of the fire wielders. But what makes them so bad? Why are they "inherently" evil? It's pretty clear from the beginning that there is much more to be discovered.
Bylur, Lisa, and Lucas have their own bits of contention to deal with. The death of a leader of the council, stepping into leadership roles themselves, internal betrayal...Nothing is as simple as they thought it was. They must navigate friendship, politics, danger, love, and try to not lose themselves in the process.
There were a few places I felt then pace slow a little too much, but never quite enough for me to put the book down. I'd consider it mostly medium paced, with a few action scenes that make it worthwhile.
