From the Silence of the Shadows is an intense continuation of the Veridian Empire series. Although this may be read as a standalone, there are characters who were part of the previous books in the series. Following in the footsteps of Of the Curse or the Crown, the story focuses on Devora and the dragon shifter, Nox. Although the pacing feels a bit slow(er) at the beginning, the tension is a steady build. By the time the action picks up, everything feels like it has been steadfastly careening the entire time. I was caught off guard by it but I also appreciated it because of how difficult it was for me to get into the headspace I feel like I needed.
Devora is the seemingly mystery FMC without a past and readers only know of snippets of it based on prior knowledge from previous books. As the story and world expands, so too does Devora’s knowledge of her actual capabilities. On the other hand, Nox is the mysterious dragon shifter with a past that he uses to drive his future and his motivations. Despite the nebulous nature of the main characters, the interactions and relationship they share with one another and their found family is one of the strong elements this story has.
Overall, this story is one you’re not going to want to miss. It is a longer book so be prepared to give it more time and to be more patient but I think the internal impact (at least for me) is worth it. Thank you so much to V.B. Lacey for the gifted ARC! All opinions are my own.
