Fates that Bind is an intriguing mix of the past and present.The mysterious energy and circumstances of each of the characters only serve to bring readers further in to the world of Briar Hollow. Renata Blackthorn is a gray witch and her powers bring her closer to the realm of spirit magic, however, she is the only gray witch in a family of green witches and the previous gray witches in her family have all been cursed. When she receives a mysterious letter from a great-aunt she decides to make the journey to Dreaming Willow Inn, an inn that holds many more mysteries and revelations in the small town of Briar Hollow.
The idea behind the novel is very interesting as is the magic system which lends itself to the overall mystery. I enjoyed how Renata becomes more comfortable with her abilities and how she begins to trust and come out of her shell as she meets more witches. This process also gives her the chance to uncover and learn more about the curse in her family which plays a huge role in the story. The plot can be slow at times but the revelations that come from the different discoveries are fairly captivating.
