Ink and Bone is a fantastic first book in a steampunk dystopian novel which imagines a world in which the Great Alexandria Library was never destroyed and instead controls all knowledge and books. Jess Brightwell joins a group of other "postulants" in an effort to gain one of six positions within the Library. This book is difficult to describe as it is filled with intricate world building. It's got battles, magic, social commentary, and intrigue all rolled into one. The characters are well developed and the world building is well thought out. In this world, people don't own books. Instead the entire world population accesses books through the Codex (essentially a massive electronic card catalog) and filling "blanks", which are basically Kindles (which was a little jarring, as I read this on my Kindle lol). I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
