Book: Volik by S.J. Tilly

I have been a huge fan of SJ Tilly for a while, and when she announced she was starting a Paranormal romance series I was immediately hooked. Volik has everything I love about her writing, but with monsters, lore, and magic.
Volik and Nix are going along like nothing is new in their lives, until the moment Nix turns 30. Then like two magnets they are forcibly brought together in an explosive way-much to the dismay of everyone else at Stalden University. This is definitely not some will they/won't they/slow burn play it safe kind of story. Nix and Volik come together and figure they will have the rest of their lives to get to know each other. Fated mates, amiright?
I love the way the magic users and supernaturals are set up in this universe. Vampires are not typical in this world (not sensitive to garlic or sunlight and have reflections/show up in photos). Volik is very powerful and the changes Nix goes through as a result of their mating are a lot of fun to see. I love how he handles the rest of the world's interest too- touch her and die to the extreme.
Jenny makes for a great best friend for Nix, who seems not to have had a bunch of friends in the past. The other supernaturals that end up helping the couple along the way, the shifters, druids and his extended family are also great characters I hope we get a chance to see more of.
And just when you think it is over and you are swooning over the happily ever after, you get a sneak peek at what will hopefully play out in book 2. All in all, it makes for a perfect paranormal read.
I feel like Volik is a new version of fairytale, that brings something new to the vampire world and is perfect escapist reading.
Thank you to the author for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
