I thought it was a good idea to listen to the traditionally published audiobook while reading the independently published physical copy I had, and for most of the book, the two versions lined up pretty well. It was really only toward the end that I noticed more substantial changes between them. I was also fortunate enough to receive an ARC, so yes, I am over a week late with this review. 😅
One of my favorite things about this book was Atta herself . She is incredibly smart, and I loved that the story never made her intelligence something she needed to downplay. Even better was Sonder’s reaction to it. He is genuinely impressed by how intelligent she is and never seems threatened or intimidated by her mind. I really enjoyed watching that dynamic develop because his admiration for her felt sincere.
I also really liked how Irish folklore was woven into the story. I wasn’t immediately sold on the transition when that part of the story was first introduced, and I did wonder where it was going. But ultimately, I thought the folklore was incorporated well and that the threads came together nicely by the end.
The morbid, gothic atmosphere and underlying sense of danger definitely kept me turning the pages, but if I’m being honest, Sonder and Atta were what really hooked me . Their dynamic gave the story an emotional pull that kept me invested even when I had questions about where certain plot elements were going.
Overall, The Exorcism of Faeries gave me a gothic, dangerous, folklore-infused story with a couple at its center that I genuinely enjoyed following. There were parts that took some time to click for me, but by the end, I felt that the pieces came together well enough to leave me with a satisfying reading experience.
