Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes. This one compounds it with friends to enemies to lovers. Shelby and Beau have tons of history, growing up playing golf together for starters. Beau is also Shelby's best friend's brother. That all turned to animosity after a single tournament when they were teenagers that Shelby just can't let go of.
Since they both need a PR boost, their agent books them together for a doubles tournament, and they are then forced to spend time together for weeks. Even the best grudge-holder would have trouble maintaining a years long grudge without proof in such close proximity.
From the start these to have more chemistry than sense. Their banter and chatter with each other on and off the course is soooo entertaining. That alone makes this an almost perfect read. Then you add in the having to work together, in a way that reminds them of the type of friends they used to be, and you have yourself a great book.
Just as in the last book, Poker Club adds in a little bit of the hilarious group chat to the mix. All of the side characters are a hoot, but of course Phyllis and Kitty take the cake. Really, there wasn't enough of the fast talking octogenarians for me.
The mystery of who changed the cards added a little bit of unexpected tension to the whole book. And, not to give anything away, but justice is definitely served-- even though it's been years since the incident.
The spice in this one is pretty spectacular. That is to be expected though when there is so much antagonism between Shelby and Beau. I love the way it is written. And when the sweet and romantic moments make an appearance, it really makes me love their love story even more.
This book is a very funny take on the second chance, enemies to lovers, workplace and best friend's brother tropes. It is definitely worth checking out.
