Thank you Harper Perennial for the gifted book. All opinions are my own. (I paired this one with the audiobook from my library.)
I started off really digging this one, with the witchy/devilish vibes. I think I was digging those vibes so hard, that when the twist happened, it was one I didn’t really gel with? It was certainly a fine twist, that definitely worked for the story, just not one that 100% worked for me .
But, still, overall, I did enjoy most of what this book was giving me.
First of all: the setting of Edinburgh. I felt absolutely transported. One of my favorite places in the world, so it’s always going to be a winner for me.
There were also some interesting characters, including the “main” one, who is…hard to like? But that’s not a turn off for me; I love mess. 😜
I also loved the mystery, and the kind of spookiness, of the “murder” at the center of the story. It definitely kept me guessing, and had me picking up the audio over and over to find out just what was going on.
Overall, it may not have stuck the landing for me , but I still had an enjoyable time.
Audiobook notes: I really enjoyed Angus King’s narration. I thought the single narrator worked well for this one, even with the wide array of POV characters…for reasons, but also because i liked how it felt consistent throughout.
