I haven’t been able to stick to a book all week, but Storm Breaker shook me right out of it. If you miss the "Golden Era" of dystopian fiction but want something that feels fresh, high-stakes, and more mature—this is it. It gives massive Divergent vibes but is set in a gritty, post-apocalyptic Manhattan that feels entirely its own.
The story follows Poet as she enters Amery Academy . I loved the world-building here—the different houses, the hidden abilities, and the sharp contrast between those who live in the "Society" and those on the outskirts. As the story unfolds, you realize that what happens in the shadows behind closed doors is often much worse than the world outside.
Poet is a phenomenal FMC. Her complicated relationship with her family and the abuse she endured really shaped her into a resilient, morally-driven character. Watching her navigate the academy, reconnect with her brother's former boyfriend, Henry, and ultimately choose herself was incredibly satisfying.
And then there is Rook. I am officially obsessed. His "touch her and die" energy is strong, and the way he constantly protects Poet—standing up to Knox and even her own mother—really endeared him to me. There is still so much we don’t know about him, but the mystery only makes it better.
In a digital-heavy world, I loved the detail of Rook owning a physical book. Based on the description, I’m almost certain it was The Hunger Games , which was such a clever nod to the genre.
What would a good dystopian be without a betrayal? That one stung, and the cliffhanger was brutal in the most delicious way.
I devoured this in two days and did not want to put it down. If you want a story where secrets are everywhere and things are never what they seem, run to get this.
