They say reading is subjective, and although many people loved this book, it didn’t hit for me. Here are some highlights on what made this a low rating:
The book desperately needs to be proofread and edited.
The character personalities were so flat, especially in the beginning, that you couldn’t tell the MMCs apart if you took their names out.
The pacing was choppy and didn’t flow. There were scenes where the characters were in different places of the house.
A lot of recycling of the same conflict where the FMC gets kidnapped/nearly gets kidnapped
This could use some love in giving the reader some descriptors of the environments the characters were in other than “the house was beautiful.” This is an example of there being a lot of telling and not showing.
Because of the choppy flow and writing style, there isn’t really a way to connect with the characters or care about their past relationships. Raine says she has/had feelings about Jack but doesn’t really elaborate or give us tidbits on it. Jack has some sort of obsession with her, but it’s not shown how this first manifests.
I could honestly go on, but that would be nitpicks at that point, and I feel those are the biggest points. There are a lot of things where I suspend my disbelief in a dark romance, but the choppy pacing, poor grammar, and zero personality made it hard to suspend mine at that point.
