Oh my goodness, what a beautiful, haunting love story. This was such a unique read and absolutely PERFECT for spooky season. Think Corpse Bride vibes meets dark academia , with arranged marriage, eldritch horror, supernatural mystery, gothic romance, and a love story built around the idea that perhaps even Death can't truly separate two souls.
When Penelope is bitten by a venomous spider, Death comes for her. Penelope isn't afraid of dying. She's afraid she hasn't lived enough yet to be ready for Death. So Death lets her stay. And from there, Penelope finally begins fighting for the life she's never really been allowed to have. She desperately wants an education, while her parents are determined to marry her off for their own benefit. Enter Victor (her new fiancรฉ and quite possibly the sweetest bug nerd ever). He's romantic, kind, and actually negotiates for Penelope to attend university alongside him. I genuinely loved Victor, which makes everything that follows so much more interesting. Because students at the university are mysteriously dying. And there seems to be a disturbing connection between those deaths and people who have harmed or insulted Penelope.
Then there's Professor Dain. (Hello, Shadow Daddy. ๐Ÿ–ค) He's mysterious, incredibly sexy, and apparently capable of making Penelope forget every sensible thought she's ever had. This is a slow burn , though, so don't go in expecting wall-to-wall explicit scenes. Instead, there's a ton of sensual tension, passionate encounters, and enough heavy petting to give an entirely new meaning to the '80s song Hot for Teacher . ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ”ฅ
As much as I enjoyed the romance and mystery, it was the writing itself that really elevated this one for me. The language is poetic. The descriptions are beautiful. There's an almost dreamlike quality to the darker moments, and the gothic atmosphere completely enveloped me. It feels romantic and unsettling at the same time, which is exactly what I want from this kind of story. And that ending... Beautiful. I won't spoil it, but it gave me exactly what I want from a romantic ghost story. Love is eternal.
