When Anna, a museum worker, accidentally awakens one of the ancient gargoyles from their collection she wasn't expecting him to be a) real or b) her mate. There was banter, flirtation, domesticity and a fair bit of pining from Frey. Which is understandable since he's cooped up in her apartment every day avoiding discovery, befriending her cat and grappling with the modern world. Also, grey sweat pants.
Anna deals with chronic migraines and this was great chronic illness rep, with Frey wanting to care for her but unable to magically take away her pain. So real.
As Anna uncovers the mysteries around the gargoyles, the curious museum owners and the history of Frey's clan, she finds herself in danger as the story unfolds.
This is a super cosy monster romance, with historical lore, and modern day challenges. Anna is fiercely independent and Frey falls hard and fast for his Heartsong, and their time spent together is sometimes slow and quiet and homely which is a nice cosy pace. I'm really looking forward to the next instalment in the series to see where the overarching story goes from here.
