Burning Skies, Lost Loves

Book: When the Sky Burns by Isla Lockwood

This book has everything a fantasy reader could want. Magic, blood oaths, riders of mythical creatures. Love, longing, lost loves found and then lost again. All in the span of twelve nights.

The mythical creature that is ridden is not a dragon, as most fastasy books do, but phoenixes. The phoenix was "given" to the people by the Gods to end the war that was raging across, and destroying, the land at that time. That was many generations ago though.

They tried to control the Skyworld by making our Riders take blood oaths to them, stopping women from flying, and so Skyworld became imbalanced.

We start with Aliwen sneaking into the Great Library, where she repairs books that were stolen from her homeland. That homeland, Annatalia, was attacked and destroyed ten years ago. A friend, Aster, got her adn her two cousins, Ember and Thorn, out of the city and to a farm where they were safe for a while. They were/are royals of Annatalia, but they have talismans that keep them safe from detection. She gets the book she was there to steal so she could buy their freedom. She got it, got out and that was just the first night of Yule. The adventure really begins after that and what happens next is....

Anyway, this is a compelling read. I really enjoyed it very much, and it is going on my read again shelf.

The Seer had seen it all along. “‘The sky burns… and then everything changes.’”
