๐ Cliff Notes Review-
A really promising premise that sadly never developed enough for me. I didnโt regret reading it, but the romance lacked chemistry and emotional connection, the world needed far more lore and history, and the fated-mate/why-choose elements felt more like setup than payoff. Elara seemed to collect potential mates, feel the pull, not understand it and then simply carry on. I wanted yearning, tension, questions, answers and actual relationship development. Instead, everything felt a little too surface level. Very disappointing considering how much potential the concept had, and I wonโt be continuing the series.

This actually started as a 3โญ read in my head, but when I compared it with the books Iโve previously rated 3 stars, I realised it simply wasnโt at the same standard. So I dropped it slightly to 2.75 โญ. I didnโt hate it and I donโt regret reading it, but there were too many areas where I wanted considerably more depth, particularly the romance, chemistry, character development, lore and worldbuilding.
This wasnโt just missing the little something that would have taken it from four stars to five for me. My biggest problem was depth . I kept waiting to properly understand this world, its history, its rules, its magic, the conflict between the mages and shifters and exactly what these bonds meant. Instead, I was given pieces without enough foundation underneath them.
The romance suffered from exactly the same problem. Elara would encounter another potential mate, there would be that pull or tingly awareness, and thenโฆ that was essentially it. She didnโt understand what was happening, but rather than this creating a delicious mystery, panic, yearning or emotional conflict, she seemed to accept another confusing man being added to the equation and carry on with her day. ๐ I needed chemistry . I needed conversations and connection. I needed to understand why these people belonged together beyond fate apparently saying so.

The actual premise was one of the strongest things about this book. A mage trained within a military-style academy to kill shifters becoming bound to one of the very creatures she has been taught to hate is exactly the sort of setup that should have had me hooked. Add multiple mysterious men, forbidden bonds, opposing factions and the potential for a why-choose romance, and all the ingredients were sitting right there.
The pacing itself was generally easy to move through, although certain information became repetitive, particularly earlier in the story. My bigger problem was that the book moved forward without giving me enough information to make the developments mean something. There was very little lore, history, rules, justification or detail. I wanted to understand why the mages and shifters hated one another, how their society developed, how the magic worked, what the academy had taught Elara, how the bonds operated and why these connections were important.
It occasionally felt as though I had entered a world everybody else already understood and nobody had remembered to hand me the instruction manual. For a first book in a fantasy/paranormal series, I expected much more grounding.

Elara unfortunately frustrated me. I understood the foundations of her character: she has been trained to hate shifters, believes deeply in what the academy has taught her and suddenly finds herself confronting evidence that challenges everything she knows. That should have created some fantastic internal conflict, but I never felt I knew her deeply enough for those changing beliefs to have the emotional impact I wanted.
The men were distinguishable and intriguing individually, and I actually think there was a lot of potential within the group. My problem was the relationships. I donโt need immediate declarations or instant emotional intimacy, especially in book one of a developing why choose, but I do need something that makes me desperate to watch those relationships develop. Attraction and a magical pull alone arenโt enough for me.
I wanted the men and Elara to talk, clash, challenge one another and slowly discover pieces of each other. I wanted that horrible delicious feeling of I hate you, so why canโt I stop thinking about you? Instead, the romantic progression sometimes felt like a switch being flipped because the story needed the connection to exist.

I wouldnโt reread this and, unusually for a first book that is clearly laying foundations for more, I wonโt be continuing the series . I donโt regret reading it, though. There were enough interesting ideas here that I can understand why another reader might enjoy it, particularly someone who prefers lighter world building and faster romantic developments.
I would recommend it cautiously to readers who love paranormal academy settings, wolf shifters, mages, fated mates, forbidden romance and developing why-choose dynamics but who arenโt looking for particularly detailed lore or deeply developed relationships from book one.

This was ultimately a case of loving the possibilities far more than the execution . The ingredients were practically designed for me: shifters, magic, enemies, an academy, fated bonds, multiple potential mates and a heroine whose entire belief system should be falling apart around her. I should have been eating this up.
Instead, I kept waiting for another layer that never arrived. More lore. More history. More explanations. More chemistry. More yearning. More emotional conflict. Justโฆ more .
The thing that disappointed me most was the romance. I didnโt need the why-choose relationship completed in book one, but I wanted to finish absolutely desperate to see these people together. Instead, Elara seemed to keep discovering men, experiencing strange feelings towards them without really understanding why, and then carrying on. The bonds were there, but I didnโt feel them.
I finished it thinking โthat was fineโ rather than โgive me book two immediately,โ and with a series opener, that distinction matters. There are some genuinely interesting ideas buried in here, but I needed considerably more depth to become invested in either the world or the relationships.
I donโt regret reading it, but sadly I wonโt be returning for book two.

I managed to finish it but it was rubbish. I won't keep a physical copy and won't recommend it, but it's a shame as the plot could have made a good book in another author's hands

It was OK. I wish I didn't start this one as it didn't do it for me as I struggled to read it. It had an interesting premise that fell flat but I had to see what happened in the end.

I don't regret reading it, and I will read the next one, but this one did have a few flaws. [These could be repetitive writing, gaps or plot holes, better character growth or world building, areas needing more detail]
Generally, the book lacked depth and became confusing. The plot resonated with me even though it annoyed me on the whole.

Good book! I loved it, but... I needed more! I really did enjoy it, but it had a few parts that needed more detail or added history/background or lore. But that's because the story or characters were memorable, and the plot was strong with brilliant twists. I would re-read if I needed to catch up for the next book and would recommend.

This is my God level tier. The book must be perfectly memorable. Even after reading 50+ more books, I will remember character names and emotions along with the plot. If there is a special edition, then I need to own it! If there is a conversation on books- I'm talking about this!
