Between Lark and Lore is the penultimate book in the Fate of the Embered series, and with it we see a new set of MCs step forward. Our new MMC is Gavrel Larkin’s younger brother Kade, and our new FMC is the mysterious Caelora. Their story takes us on a trek through the mountains where they are accompanied by runesmaster Jace Barden while pursuing the remaining two elders. Each of them carries a secret(s) they are not ready to face and/or share.
If I’m being honest while I enjoyed the overall story (obviously I rated this book 4 stars after all!), I struggled with reading this book because the first 3 books made me absolutely LOATHE Kade. He treated Seryn badly after she admitted that she could not love him as anything more than a friend, but then when he realizes he has feelings for Caelora he’s all noble. It made me dearly want to punch him…again. Hahaha. But he did start to grow on me me, just the tiniest bit. 🤏🏼
Now, on to the main part of this review. Ahem
The romance in Between Lark and Lore is subtle, as the focus is on finding the traitorous elders. And I was definitely getting vibes for a potential threesome in the final book. 👀 Or will a choice be made?
The overall pace of the book is slow, but it is filled with important information. Embers behave in new and unusual ways. We see some old foes and make new friends along the way. Long guarded secrets are thrust into the light. But what does it all mean? How will these puzzle pieces fit together to fulfill the prophecy?
Between Lark and Lore’s setting reminds me of the fellowship trying to cross the mountain before having to go through the Mines of Moria. I don’t know if Rowyn did that intentionally or not, but there are some strong similarities that were hard to ignore.
By the end of Between Lark and Lore my brain was full of theories about how all these puzzle pieces will come together in book 5. I cannot wait to see how many of my theories pan out, and I hope we reunite with the OGs for the final showdown.
