I clicked on the ARC request for this so fast! It’s the second book in this series, and the first book ends on a cliffhanger. Luckily for the reader, Lexi Davis included a recap at the beginning and starts the story right where is left off. As someone who inhales books, I sometimes forget the nuances of my reads and was immensely grateful for the refresher.
This is a dark romance with some dark academia flair complete with a secret society. We get layered complexity from returning characters as well as new faces who were only hinted at in the first book. There’s a prequel (Pretty Ruthless) which gives more background on the order and features some of the characters’s parents. While I haven't read it yet, I could tell certain moments in this book would hit with even more emotional weight if you have that backstory!
I loved Laurel and Carrson’s relationship evolving. Despite how things started with them, they’re becoming more of a team. They’re forced to navigate some archaic, barbaric laws of the Order, and I was on the edge of my seat seeing how they handled it all.
I haven’t read a dark romance in a bit, so I had to adjust my brain chemistry when I began reading. Things like money isn’t an issue in these types of novels, and the extravagant settings provide a pure fun, stress-free escapism. The plot focuses heavily on the secret society rather than the actual academic side of college (think L.O.R.D.S. series vibes).
This ends on another cliffhanger! If you’re looking for a dark romance for the fallo season, this is a good series to pick up! I'm eager for the next installment and will definitely be reading Pretty Ruthless in the meantime.
