I love a good retelling but although this has lots of Arthurian nods, it is very much its own thing with unique world building and mythology. I did try and piece things together as I went but there was one name drop that made me give a little gasp and it broke my heart a little though!
This is just so much fun and was very easy to get swept up in. Syn is an FMC who is capable and thinks on her feet, whilst also not having a chip on her shoulder despite having a pretty rubbish time of it. Her inner smirking at Vicky's roots made me laugh; I hope we see how miserable Owain is at some point.
There is a slow burn simmering in an almost but not quite love triangle, between the best friend and a mysterious Knight and I think the conversation Syn and Tristan had in Chapter 46 was one of my favourite moments. My favourite character was Elizabeth though who was just so funny; she is 100% an enabler and had some cracking one liners.
It's not all fun and games though as Syn inadvertently has to compete in deadly trials to try and win the Fey crown. The action scenes are great and I really enjoyed all the different type of magic at play. I want to know more about Syn's magic though as that whole story hasn't been revealed yet.
Highly recommend if you are looking for a new romantasy read; there are some cracking twists towards the end and I’m looking forward to book two already!
My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read
