Amelie has had a rough ride throughout the series, and there is still plenty of drama as she settles into her role as Leader of the Order. Harold continues to scheme which keeps everyone on edge, and this time he seems to have help. Amelie isn't going to take this lying down though and with help coming from some unexpected places, her enemies are going to learn their lessons the hard way. Valerie Starre does a great job at showing Amelie's insecurities while she learns the ropes and also whilst coming to terms which her awful treatment towards Slate after the events of the previous book.
Despite some of the heavier subject matter, there are still lighter moments and plenty of glimpses of Amelie and her guys' lives outwith Harold's shady shadow. I did find myself looking for a bit more plot surrounding Harold towards the middle but it was nice to see Amelie and her friends having a breather. I also thought Laura would be a lot more prevalent but over the course of the series she has been largely off page; I'd hoped for more from her.
This series has definitely cemented James Joseph as one of my favourite narrators. Kalen and Baxter's bonding adventure was a lot of fun and I just know that Kalen will eventually wear him down. I am going to have to return to Baxter's series; I need to remind myself of his happy ending although I would have loved to see him and Kalen in the same cohort!
My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read
