I was pleasantly surprised. Because I read “The Knight and the Moth” by the same author, I was familiar with her writing style. I decided to pick it up off my physical TBR because one of my best friends strongly encouraged me to do so. I was not disappointed.

Not only that, but I find the story well written and the dark atmosphere well transcribed. Are there some points that are still blurry? Yes. Overall, I quickly got into the story and kept wanting to know more about the cards, the magic, the world itself, and what would happen.

I also loved the way some characters talked, as well as the lyrical rhymes present all over the book. I couldn’t help but read them out loud like poetry. Just to be clear, I’m not into poetry; I don’t know if it’s a good one, just that I enjoyed it.

I would say this book is a bit slow-paced with a lot of characters to remember. Several of those are not who we think they are... It actually surprised me seeing how complex some of those really were!

Now, the book ends on a cliffhanger, which means I need to read book two straight away!
