We return to Maple Troews journey crossing the desert to seek truth and help for her sister who’s medical condition has become dire. She along with everyone else, needs their magic unlocked, or the consequences could be fatal. The gang of found family members faces trials and tribulations on the way to the city, but also discovers many self-realizations. Reality comes calling when they make it to Zaipher and a shocking surprise waits. The further they travel the more shocking the events are that happen…. Life changing events. The foreseeable future is full of war and problems bigger than themselves to solve, but if they stick together, perhaps they can conquer anything.
This is a well-paced, high-stakes story full of enchanting characters and unique concepts. Tane is the ultimate book boyfriend who wants Maple so desperately that it will be hard to find another love interest who compares.
I love how unique Maple’s character is as a neurodivergent individual. The details of how she perceives and experiences the world are spot-on for a high-functioning adult. She often misunderstands or is not able to Interpret social scenarios and makes claims like, “I’m not sure I really grasp the concept of what it meant.” She is sweet, and fierce, and has the best qualities of a female heroine.
Best quotes: “I've had romantic partners over the years. Women who have filled a need, but not a single one of them has lit me on fire the way Maple does. Not one of them challenged me the way Maple does either. I thought I liked predictability, submission, a warm body and a warm bed. I was very wrong.
Turns out what I like is wild hair and dangerously dark eyes and a woman who would rather spit in my face than follow my orders blindly.”
“I am trying not to pin you against this vehicle and take that sweet mouth of yours in front of everyone in this building, Maple Treow, I reply to her in my mind.”
“There is still good out there, Maple, even the darkness can be beautiful of someone is brave enough to open their eyes.”
