Suck has one of the most absolutely unhinged premises I’ve ever read, and somehow it completely works.
The world-building? Surprisingly immersive. The Vyastil customs, politics, and portal lore all feel fully developed without overwhelming the romance, and I could vividly picture Rathyn and his world the entire time—which is saying something for someone who usually defaults to picturing Henry Cavill as every MMC.
Everest works perfectly as the audience surrogate because he’s just as lost as we are when it comes to the Vyastil and humanity’s role in their society. But even through all the confusion, his desire to genuinely help and protect people makes him easy to root for. I also appreciated that the humans in his life had conflicting opinions about the monsters rather than everyone instantly landing on the same side. It made the tension feel more believable.
And yes, there is a lot of sucking. The title is not subtle. But beneath the chaos and the extremely creative anatomy lies a relationship that’s surprisingly tender. Everest introducing Rathyn to human intimacy—flirting, kissing, cuddling, affection without expectation—turned out to be some of my favorite parts of the book. Those quieter moments give the relationship real emotional weight and keep it from becoming all shock value.
I’m already invested in this world and the monster/human dynamics, and Cielo absolutely stole scenes as a secondary character. I need his book immediately.
