I really liked the whole idea and plot of this book: the tyrant emperor, the misogynous society, using religion as a weapon, and always undermining women. The true "enemies to lovers" vibe was definitely there! But sadly, I couldn't connect with the main characters and their relationship the way I would have liked. It didn't feel like a "slow burn" because they definitely felt "something" from the very start, even when a devastating event was happening right THERE (that was a little weird for me)...
The way this story is written is beautiful and lyrical, but sometimes I found myself confused by a scene rather than intrigued about what was going on.
And even after reading the whole story, I couldn't understand Evander and Aria's powers. The same happened with "the Veil": I actually didn't understand what it was and why it was connected to some wielders but not to all. Not to mention the sudden introduction of Elves and their own connection to the story.
I was left with more questions than answers. I think there could have been more explanations about the worldbuilding and magic system, and about the characters' backstories and families. About a lot of things.
The idea was great, truly, but the writing style just wasn't for me.
