I enjoyed Shedding Starlight , but Dawns Embrace took the story in a direction that made me appreciate Nyx's journey so much more! The mysteries that kept me guessing in the first book finally began to unravel, the world grew bigger, and most importantly, I felt like I was finally getting to know Nyx beyond the things that had happened to her.
What I loved most about Dawns Embrace was watching Nyx begin to understand herself. After spending so much of her life being rejected and made to feel unworthy, it made total sense that she would cling to the people who offered her acceptance. But as the story continued, she started to recognize how that need for belonging had influenced her choices and made it difficult to question the people she trusted. There were moments when her intuition (and other celestial guides) told her to pause, but she couldn't bring herself to doubt those around her. Once she started trusting herself, I really appreciated her ability to reflect on those experiences without losing compassion for herself. Watching her begin to claim her confidence and recognize that her life should belong to her was easily my favorite part of the book.
I also enjoyed how much their world opened up. The journey through new and dangerous places, the introduction of different realms, and the deeper exploration of the mythology gave the story a greater sense of adventure. There were some interesting new characters along the way too, and I especially enjoyed the moments that allowed Nyx's personality to shine through.
And then there were the secrets! I had my suspicions going into this book, so some of the revelations didn't necessarily shock me, but I still found them satisfying. I loved seeing the little details I'd picked up on begin to make sense. The complicated relationships became even more interesting once I understood what was motivating the characters.
I did have some of the same reservations I had with the first book. The prose didn't always pull me in as much as I wanted it to, and I noticed moments of repetition that slowed the reading experience for me. While there were some really compelling developments, I wasn't consistently swept up in the story between them. The ending seemed to ease into what comes next, until BAM! Another twist! (So good!)
Even with the few things that pulled me from the story, Dawn's Embrace was a definite upgrade for me. What made the difference wasn't simply the bigger world or the answers to the mysteries. It was Nyx. Seeing her begin to question what she'd been told, trust her own instincts, and understand that she deserves to have a say in her own future gave this story the emotional depth I'd been hoping for.
It seems to me that this story just keeps getting better, so I'm excited to see Nyx fully come into her own and shine like she never has before!
⭐⭐⭐⭐💫4.5 Stars!
