Between Lark and Lore continues the story of Caelora, Kaden and Jace, as they are hunting down the Elder who killed her mother. Who also happens to be her father.
There is a lot of discovery in this book, about the characters and their backstory, their own traumas and pain, what motivates them in their search now. It dives into trauma without feeling overwhelming, just very heartfelt and actually quite relatable despite my not living in a fantasy world.
Jace, oh my. I think Jace might be one of my favourite characters from the whole series now. He's reserved, but you can tell he feels deeply for Caelora and Kaden. As he learns about his family history and his father's role you start to learn more about how his mind works too, and what that might mean for his future. I was also really interested in the new characters they meet, plus wyverns, and we got a lot of info that helps to make sense of some of the happenings in the first trilogy.
The pacing was great in the beginning as we're learning more about the world and characters, but it really picks up towards the end when the big things start going down. The romance is a slow burn, quietly yearning for more that will develop in the future. If you've read of any Rowyn's other books you'll know that her writing is beautiful, lyrical and flowing and it builds a world that you can genuinely picture in your mind.
Technically you can start with Between Lark and Lore, since it's the start of a new romance story, but I think it will be best enjoyed if you have read the first trilogy in the series, starting with Of Withering Dreams.
