I listened to Bloodsinger by Juliette Cross as an audiobook ALC and really enjoyed this second installment in the series. While it follows Firebird, it functions more as an interconnected standalone with a new central couple while still continuing the broader story—and thankfully it addresses the cliffhanger from book one immediately!
This book follows Lela and Trajan, and I loved their dynamic. Their chemistry was strong from the start, and the tension between them carried the story really well. Watching them navigate trust, power, and loyalty within the world’s complicated political and magical systems made their story really engaging.
The romance includes some spice (around a 2.75 for me), but it felt thoughtfully handled, especially considering Lela’s past trauma. The intimacy felt meaningful rather than gratuitous, and Trajan’s patience and care made their dynamic feel believable.
The audiobook production was excellent, with dual narration that worked well for the dual POV. Both narrators brought a lot of personality to the characters and made it easy to stay immersed in the story.
Like the first book, the world remains dark and morally complex, touching on themes like power, control, and survival. Readers should be aware that the story includes potentially triggering content, including sexual assault, slavery, and self-harm.
Overall, Bloodsinger expands the world of the series while delivering a romance that stands well on its own. If you enjoy fantasy romance with darker themes, political intrigue, and interconnected character stories, this one is definitely worth picking up.
