Book: Ashes Fall at Dawn: Book Two in the Trium Perfectum Series by Kara M. Zone

Rating: 3/5
Plot summary (no spoilers): Kaitlin is trapped in Hallowed Hill Manor with stolen memories. Her brother Max and his friend Finn infiltrate the manor to rescue her, but they must trigger her memories before her mother, Lilith, consumes her future.
Writing style & pacing: A "whirlwind." You noted the pacing was too fast, rushing through crucial development and relying on "telling" rather than "showing."
Character development: Lacking in emotional caution. Kaitlin’s quick return to Finn felt unearned given her memory loss, and characters lacked the care her fragile state required.
World-building: Confusing and vague. While the "Emberland" lore is promising, the details regarding Gilbert Enterprises and the Tribunal remained frustratingly opaque.
Emotional impact: Flat. The "telling" approach to Kaitlin’s fear resulted in a lack of genuine resonance.
Themes & messages: C-PTSD, the cycle of maternal abuse, and the fight to reclaim a stolen past.
Content warnings: C-PTSD, physical abuse, attempted SA, gaslighting, and graphic violence.
Recommendation & rating: 3/5 Stars. Recommended only for those who prioritize fast-paced, high-steam plots over deep emotional grounding.
