After receiving my ARC for The Bone Debt , I knew pretty early on that this was going to be a five-star read for me. Some books give me that feeling, and this was one of those stories. I'm talking like 3 chapters in. I was completely drawn into the story, happily smiling through so much of it, and genuinely enjoying every moment I spent with these characters.
Elayna is a young woman with dreams of studying the art of healing and making a life for herself, but her family's expectations leave little room for her own choices. When an unexpected encounter with a charming pirate offers her a rather unconventional way out of an unwanted marriage, she makes a decision that changes everything. And what follows is an adventure filled with danger, secrets, found family, and a romance I could not get enough of.
Easily one of my favorite things about this book was the relationship between Elayna and Crimson. Their chemistry was blazing from the beginning, and the banter made me smile constantly. But what made their romance so special was how naturally it developed. Crimson is protective and completely captivated by Elayna, yet his respect for her never feels secondary to his desire. I loved watching them gradually open up to one another, especially through the moments when they struggled to say everything they were feeling.
The magical bond between them was another favorite detail. I've read several stories featuring characters who can communicate through a bond, but this one felt particularly human. Their thoughts sometimes slipped through unintentionally, creating moments that were funny, vulnerable, and surprisingly relatable. And when they began writing little letters to one another, I loved that even more (for so many reasons)!
I also loved the balance between romance and adventure. There was always something happening, but the pacing never felt rushed to me. Each new challenge seemed to serve the larger story, and the characters' decisions and reactions felt earned. The dual perspectives worked beautifully, too. I especially enjoyed Crimson's chapters, which allowed us to understand his feelings and longing while Elayna was still learning to trust the life unfolding around her. It made the slow burn all the more satisfying.
And the crew! I became so attached to the people aboard Mynastra's Wings . Their personalities, complicated histories, and evolving relationships made the ship feel like a genuine home rather than simply the setting for the adventure. And don't get me started on Elayna's friendship with Reed. It's so great to see such a meaningful platonic connection alongside the central romance. Their friendship served to fortify one another, allowing each to show themselves grace through the pain of their experiences- it was truly beautifully written.
The mythology surrounding Mynastra, the bone debts, and the sea dragons added another layer of magic to an already captivating world. I loved how naturally those elements were woven into the story, and how the mysteries and revelations continued to build on one another without taking away from the characters at its heart.
What I appreciated most, though, was the way Leah Mara handled the emotional relationships throughout the book. The internal thoughts felt natural, the tenderness felt genuine, and the moments of intimacy grew from a place of real trust. The trauma from their pasts wove perfectly into their present-day decisions and motivations (and not just Elayna and Crimson - most characters were given the space to feel human). I was invested in the prose, the people, and the journey from beginning to end, and I couldn't have asked for a more satisfying conclusion.
The Bone Debt gave me everything I hoped for in a pirate romantasy: an adventurous plot, fascinating mythology, a lovable found family, and a romance full of chemistry, tenderness, and genuine connection.
I loved this book, and I would happily return to this world over and over!!
