I really enjoyed reading Scorpion Deep; in particular, stepping into Jonathan Covey's world up in Maine, as the reader bears witness to the every day life that digs deeper into themes like Grief, Friendships, and Rituals gone wrong...(or Right, depending on your perspective.)
The Isolating world of the everyday was also a major highlight for me, as Johnathan was depicted as the black sheep of his community.
Now, with both of his childhood friends heading to college outside of the Isolated Isle, long-lost secrets, Sea Cryptids, and Coming-of- Age drama are thrown into the mix.
Jonathan's future is very uncertain; He and his closest friends partake in the "Scorpion Deep" ritual, and that's when everything goes wrong.
There's an Asexual MC, and this book is Heavily Queer, which I adored.
Along with the themes of Obsessive Love, I was really surprised by the twist, and it felt reminiscent of Shedding Starlight, as they cover similar themes with a drastically different narrative overall. The Sea cryptids combined with "Touch Him and Die"; the combination was really well done structurally, reminding me of a lot of the folklore I would come across when approaching the horror-romance genre.
