Lines from the Soul is such a wonderful collection of poems. Some poets write so abstractly that it is hard to discern what they are trying to say unless you are somehow in their head, but FP McArthur is not one of those poets. I do not claim to be any kind of expert when it comes to poetry, but I know what sounds good to my brain and ears, and these are it. There is a sweet simplicity to these poems, but I struggle with the word simplicity because they’re not simple at all. They evoke beautiful memories of times spent in nature as you read of his own experiences. You are transported to the front lines on D-Day, of which you are too young to have experienced, or to a city or country you have not travelled to yet. I loved “Christmas Day 1914” which is about the unofficial ceasefire when the soldiers on both sides of the line put down their arms and played soccer/football, exchanged gifts, sang carols, etc. My favorite poems in this book are in the back and are a collection of whimsical poems that will put a smile on your face!
