A long time coming

Book: the brat by Serena Akeroyd

This book has been on my can't wait to read list for years- the first time I read the Five Points series and Max started sending Victoria body parts. It definitely delivered on my anticipation.
This book has the obsessive MMC Maxim running New York's Lost Boys (having taken down the Bratva). He of course keeps up with his unhinged love language of sending the body parts of his paramour's enemies. He has -like a gentleman- kept up his courting Victoria from afar, waiting for her to come to him to begin in earnest.
And go to him Victoria does- to ask his help to infiltrate the secret society that she plans to dismantle while using it to put her best friend in the Whitehouse. This book was fun in watching Victoria become as unhinged as her love.
Their love story is sweet and romantic despite the gore. I love the inevitability of it all. There is no dithering on either of their parts, which is always my favorite. Her friendships with Wynter and Shay are the kind you hold on to for life as well.
The plot kept me guessing, as usual, and much sleep was lost til I finished. Every cut of a knife, and every spicy scene just made me want more. Especially when combined with the sweetness of how she waited for him, and he waited for her since she was 18. And their first time is their wedding night- total swoon.
If you like characters who know what they want and will go through literally anything to get it, this book is for you.
Thank you to the author for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
