I absolutely loved the romance between Lainey and Remington. There was never a moment when I doubted they were a perfect match. Remington constantly built Lainey up—telling her how beautiful he found her, being open with his feelings so she was never left guessing, and encouraging her to set healthy boundaries. And Lainey truly saw Remington, appreciating every gesture, big and small. Their relationship had such ease and comfort that it felt genuinely authentic.
That said, the multiple sources of tension felt unnatural to the story, almost shoehorned in for extra drama. They either lacked a satisfying conclusion, came out of nowhere, or didn’t seem to serve the narrative at all. I would’ve much preferred seeing Lainey’s father take on the true antagonist role, rather than only being told about his emotional and mental abuse from her childhood.
Overall, I wish the book had leaned into being a romance about broken people healing, rather than adding suspense elements that didn’t feel fully integrated into the story.
