I had no idea until I read the Author’s Note at the end that Mary and Manuela were based on real people and written using real letters and documentation in addition to imagination. I love this book even more knowing that some of the things they did were true as both of them were strong women who did things back in the early to mid 1800s that would have been very unusual for women to do in those days. I find that to be really neat! It is a fascinating book that I didn’t want to put down until I finished it. If you love a good historical fiction and don’t know much about South American politics in that time period, this is a great one to check out!
