When the Stars Were Devoured is the first book in the Devoured Fates series and debut novel of author Stephanie Blair. It follows the tumultuous journey of Alora and her band of rebels who are trying to overthrow the king who persecuted those with magical abilities.
I mostly enjoyed reading When the Star Were Devoured. Stephanie has a unique and often lyrical writing style, and while it may not be for everyone, I felt it further enhanced the old world feel of the story. In a way, it reminded me of reading Tolkien at times. There were a few occasions where modern words or phrases slipped in, pulling me out of the story for a moment, but not enough to detract from the story overall. However, the settings, magic system, and multiple facets to the story were well thought out and executed in the story. I particularly enjoyed trying to puzzle out how a few certain storylines fit together, especially between the Alora and Kassiel, and how will they affect the overall outcome because I just know book two is going to bring all the feminine rage. AND I AM HERE FOR IT.
My biggest issue came with pacing. Sometimes it felt like big scenes were rushed through while smaller scenes were given in great detail. Overall, the story moved along at an appropriate pace, allowing me to stay engaged and enjoy reading the book.
When the Stars Were Devoured has a unique magic system that I hope we learn more about in book two because we did not get to see much of it in action in this book, and sometimes what we are told by the characters isn’t the whole picture. I’m curious to learn how Alora’s magic fits into whatever sinister plan the king has. Her power is not one I would think of as an “ultimate” power that is coveted above all others.
For a debut novel, I felt When the Stars Were Devoured was a great start. I am eager to see how Stephanie hones her skill in book two because I need to know how far Alora is willing to go to stop the king while trying to save those she loves from the clutches of the king. What will it cost her in the end? Will love conquer all?
