I knew I wasn't ready to leave Istri when I found myself lying awake thinking about its characters instead of going to sleep. Because the Gods Left gave me everything I hoped for in a sequel, delivering an emotionally powerful conclusion to a story I had become completely invested in.
Picking up only weeks after Because the Beasts Came , Iryana is struggling with the responsibilities of leadership, the consequences of her unusual magic, and the complicated relationships that continue to shape her life. As the threats facing Istri grow increasingly dangerous, she must learn to trust the people around her while confronting the fears and insecurities she's carried for years.
What stood out most to me was the development of the relationships, particularly between Iryana and her sisters. Their experiences growing up in the same family left them with very different wounds, and I appreciated that understanding one another didn't come easily. Their journey toward forgiveness, acceptance, and genuine sisterhood was beautifully handled and became one of the most moving aspects of the book.
The romance also takes on a greater role, bringing both wonderful moments of connection and some genuinely painful ones. I loved that Iryana and Pyetar's relationship continued to develop alongside their individual responsibilities and struggles rather than existing separately from the larger story.
The worldbuilding remains excellent, with long-standing mysteries surrounding the gods, the beasts, and the magic finally coming together. Despite the expanding stakes and increasingly dangerous conflicts, the story never loses sight of its characters. The pacing was consistently engaging, and the emotional scenes were especially powerful because of how carefully James built toward them.
But what made this book exceptional was Iryana's personal journey.
Throughout both books, she has struggled with believing she's inadequate, even when her actions repeatedly prove otherwise. In this conclusion, she begins to recognize that the harshest judgments she carries are no longer coming from the people who first made her feel unworthy. They've become part of how she sees herself.
I particularly loved how this realization connected to the magic system. Iryana's struggle to find peace within herself is both emotionally and physically consequential, and her eventual breakthrough was deeply satisfying. The answer may have been simple in principle, but reaching a place where she could truly accept it was anything but easy.
What began as a story about a young woman trying to prove her worth became one about learning she never needed to earn it in the first place.
Because the Gods Left was immersive, beautifully developed, and deeply moving. I laughed, I worried, I cried, and I finished feeling completely satisfied with where these characters ended up.
Five stars for a conclusion that gave me both the epic fantasy adventure and the emotional resolution I was hoping for. 💜
