Hide the Witches by Miranda Lyn took me on a wild ride, then threw me right off a cliff at the end! Wow!
Syneca Black is known as the Rune Weaver, but she has a secret. Forbidden fire magic is what runs through her. A secret that must be hidden at all costs, because fire witches are hunted down, and Phoenix blood is a guaranteed snuffing out of your fire forever. For years, she has lived with her friend Vitoria, who is also full of secrets that need to be hidden. Also with Calder, the Rune Eater, and her grumpy familiar, Silas. They have formed their own little family, but something happens to change it all.
The Magistrate rules the city. He has control over everyone, especially his son, Wickett. Otherwise known as “The Ripper”. They are over the Hunters that patrol the city, hunt monsters, and are looking for any witch that steps out of line or any hint they have fire powers. The Magistrate claims to be protecting the city and citizens regarding the Furies cycle set forth to repeat. While everyone has secrets they are keeping, blood debts will force a chain of events to set forth that makes you question everyone’s actions and motives.
You will also meet Pip, the sprite that loves shiny things, buzzes around like a toddler high on sugar, and is as sweet as that sugar. Lucy, a shifter that that sees more than she shares, and some secrets of her own.
This book is full of magic, mystery, secrets, betrayal, a slow burn, and an ending I guarantee you will not see coming.
The banter is great. I am a sucker for a book with great banter between all of the characters. So many quotes I could use, but this one gives you just a taste:
“Fine,” I snapped. “But if there’s a pit of spikes on the other side, I’m haunting you for eternity. I will literally make camp under the bed you claim you don’t sleep in and ruin every single moment of the rest of your shitty life, hunter.” “Noted.”
“I’d dance naked under a full moon in a circle of strange stones before I took orders from someone who barks at a sprite and makes her feel less than she’s worth. Do you also punch babies?”
