This book hooked me from the first chapter—I read half in one sitting. If you’re a fan of slow-burn romantasy with an heroine who is stronger than she realizes and a morally grey vampire MMC, A Bargain So Bloody is a must-read.
The world blends magic and danger in just the right measure, with a unique card-based magic system that feels fresh and compelling. The plot centers on secret identities, enemies to allies of convenience, a classic one horse/one bed/one tent situation, and that oh-so-satisfying “touch her and die” energy. The banter? On point. The tension? Chef’s kiss.
While we don’t yet know the full extent of the gods’ involvement, there’s a clear sense that something bigger is simmering under the surface. And just when I thought I had it figured out—the twist at the end knocked the wind out of me (in the best way). I loved it.
The heroine’s internal self-doubt did repeat a bit, but it was rooted in her backstory and made her growth feel earned. I’m already counting the days until book two drops—this setup promises something even more powerful to come.
